Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao NYC

Soup Inside a Dumpling?

Yes, that's what I asked myself in the beginning, not knowing how that could be possible at all. With the opening of Nan Xiang (a region in Shanghai, China) Xiao Long Bao (literally, soup dumplings) on 33rd Street in Midtown Manhattan, I finally got the concept, and at long last managed to consume one without spilling all the "hidden" soup—after one miserable failed attempt, that is. Thanks to my wife, who shared the secret: take a small bit off the top of the dumpling and suck the soup out gently before eating the rest of the dough and filling.

Delicious Items on the Menu

Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao has a wide variety of delicious items on their menu as well—in fact a more-than-decent assortment of high-quality Shanghainese dishes recommended for 9 years running by Michelin Guide.

What We Loved

Most of the ones we've tried my wife and I really loved, but some of my all-time favorites are their Lucky Six Soup Dumplings (six piece combo of Pork Soup Dumpling, Crab Meat & Pork Soup Dumpling, Chicken Soup Dumpling, Scallop & Pork Soup Dumpling, Black Truffle & Pork Soup Dumpling, and Gourd Luffa, Shrimp & Pork Soup Dumpling), their Pork Meatballs, and Seafood Noodle Soup. You're going to have to make more than one visit to enjoy most of the amazing items on their menu.

In the video below, my wife and I check out Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao for the first time. That definitely wasn't our last visit.
